An exhibition showing new work by artists Bronwen Grieves and Wolfgang Buttress.

We are made of matter that has travelled through stars, stones, oceans, plants, animals and time. The materials we touch are not separate from us. They belong to the same story. The Matter Between Us explores this continuum through two distinct but deeply connected practices.

Grieves works with ceramics, shaped by touch, water and fire, her forms hold impressions of making. They exist between object and trace—between the geological history of the material and the human gesture.

Buttress works across sculpture, drawing, painting and sound. He explores the vibrations and connections between us as humans and our relationship with the “natural’ world.

Together, the works consider matter as something continually changing state.

Powder becomes form. Clay retains an impression. Oil and graphite stain. Wax melts and preserves.

The works move between the tangible and the ephemeral, surface and space. They connect cosmic and geological time with the immediate act of making. Clay carries the memory of earth. Dust recalls geological and cosmic origins. Oil speaks of ancient organic matter transformed over time. Wax belongs to the living world and is reshaped through heat. Graphite becomes line and image.

Traces become manifest. Materials remember pressure, heat, touch and movement. Forms record their own becoming.

These works suggest that the boundaries between the cosmic, geological, biological and human are porous.

What we call earth, body, material, image or sound may simply be different states within a larger continuum.

Nothing begins or ends where we think it does. Matter changes form. It moves through time.

And somewhere within that transformation is the matter between us.
