Derek Sprawson – Paintings and Oil Bar Drawings from the 90s

An exhibition to support the forthcoming monograph from Beam Editions, Derek Sprawson – Painting, Drawing and Objects.

These paintings and four oil bar drawings are part of a body of work produced by @dereksprawson in the mid 90s. Some of the paintings from this series were first shown at Djanogoly Art Gallery in Nottingham in 1996, in the joint exhibition Co-incidence with fellow artist Chris Wainwright, and at Bernard Jacobson Gallery in London.

The works demonstrate the artist’s mastery of deceptively simple mark-making and composition. Bold, deep black oil bar drawings have an appearance of energetic and spontaneous mark-making but are slowly and carefully crafted by the hand of the artist. The two paintings on show have a similar quality. Sprawson has used a mix of wax and oil to create a luxuriant, textural sheen across the surface. The colours look simple too but on closer inspection the layering of other hues becomes apparent changing in different lighting conditions.

While these works are entirely abstract, many of Derek’s paintings are inspired by natural forms.

All work is for sale and will contribute towards the production of the book.
